Behavior modification is usually thought of in situations involving children with behavior problems. Children that have been diagnosed with ADHD, ADD, mental retardation, depression, social anxiety and many other disorders. However, there are many other situations where behavior modification is the recommended treatment such as behavior modification in marriage.

Behavior modification in marriage works the same way as it does with children suffering from behavior problems. The divorce rate today is higher than it has ever been before. The main reason (besides the no fault divorce) is that couples don’t or can’t always work out their differences and problems. Behavior modification in marriage helps the couples to discover what their problems are, thus making it easier to work towards correcting and eliminating them.

Behavior modification in marriage is handled by a marriage counselor or therapist who acts as a mediator for the couple. The couple is interviewed separately and as a couple so the counselor can determine what the main problems are and the best way to correct them. For instance, if a wife has a habit of saying “You never do what I ask” to her husband, she will learn a positive way to express herself to her husband. The use of positive words and thoughts is a large part of any behavior modification. For example, a better way would be for the wife to be more specific with what she would like done such as, “I would like you to pick up your towel after showering”. In this way, the husband is not put on the defensive, yet the wife is expressing her feelings.

Another effective method of behavior modification in marriage is to give “rewards” to each other when something positive takes place. For instance, if the husband picks up his towels, the wife may want to cook him his special meal or give him special time with his friends, etc. These methods have proven to be very successful with couples when both work together on their issues. However, if the problems don’t seem to be improving after a month or two, they may wish to see a therapist for counseling.

There is much information to day about the process of behavior modification, which is changing or altering the behavior of an individual by means of positive reinforcement, praise, rewards or any other methods recommended by the one in charge. Most behavior modifications are done under the advisement of a therapist or psychologist. The individuals most requiring behavior modification are children with ADHD, mentally retarded individuals, those suffering from severe depression and autistic children. There is no clear-cut method that can be used for all individuals. Usually, a behavior modification plan is put into order depending on each individual’s needs. For instance, plans behavior modification and autistic children would be different from a child diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Therapists and child psychologists have many pamphlets on the subjects of both behavior modification and autistic children. Autistic children have very special needs unlike those of other children. • Know what your goal. The goal needs to be something that is attainable to the child.

• Identify the child’s response to the stimuli. Did he or she do what was expected or not?
• Know and identify what the reward or consequence will be depending on what the child did or didn’t do.

When working on behavior modification and autistic children, it’s very important that the goal always be something the autistic child is able to do. When they succeed, do not be afraid of giving them too much praise. There are usually three different types of reward/consequence that work with autistic children. One is things that are eaten, another is things that are felt such as toys or clothes and the third one is things that are social. You will decide which one you will be using depending on what type of behavior you want to change. Another thing that needs to be kept in mind with behavior modification and autistic children is that you may start with one plan and have to change to another if it is not successful.

Behaviour modification is an experiment with problem behavior. It is based on certain principles of behavior. Most of the bases for the principles come for studies and research on the subject of motivation and learning. When the behaviour modification is used in a clinical setting, it is often referred to as conditioning therapy or behavior therapy. Sometimes, behaviour modification is thought of in the same light as operant conditioning, which is only a small part of it and usually referred to as experimental theory of behavior.

Operant conditioning is also called instrumental conditioning and are certain conditions happening because of a certain behavior or contingency. The example would be an employee working 40 hours each week and being paid for that work each week. The pay is the result of the work and the learning process is that the employee realizes that he gets paid because he worked just as a student gets a good grade for a well-written paper. This is also a type of behaviour modification.

Some people believe that behaviour modification is used anytime a specific practice alters or modifies human behavior. This, however, is not always true. In some cases, human behavior is changed by means of mind control or brain washing and behaviour modification is not brain washing by any means. Psychosurgery or electroshock is also never used for behaviour modification as it is often used for other means of altering human behavior. The true definition of behaviour modification is a structured learning process where certain behavior is learned based on the reactions and results of that behavior. With positive reinforcement, the person is more motivated toward positive behavior.

Psychology believes that behaviour modification is an experimental process because our behavior is based on a certain set of laws or principles. If the person’s behavior is changed or modified, it must be based on these laws or principles. For treatment to be effective, it must stay within the principles as the principles are applied to us as humans.

Behaviour modification is constantly changing and improving as more studies are completed. The more the researchers learn, the more they experiment with the hopes of making learning easier. Years ago, a lot of behaviour modification was done by means of medication. It was quite common for young children to be put on medication if they were diagnosed as hyperactive. The bad part of this was that the behavior seemed to improve because of the medication, not because the child was taught any differently. As soon as the medication stopped, the bad behavior returned. Today, with the help of behaviour modification, the child’s behavior is altered and changed through methods other than medication such as positive reinforcement and praise. Doctors feel this method works more effectively.

Behavior Modification Charts are a very valuable tool for helping with behavior modification with children and young adults. When attempting to modify or change bad into good behavior, the first step that needs to be done is to determine which behavior will be dealt with first. Children that suffer from ADHD often have more than one behavior issue. If parents try to change too many bad behavior problems at one time, the child can become confused and frustrated, often causing failure or slowing down the process.

Usually when there is a serious behavior problem, parents seek the help of a therapist or child psychologist. The therapist or child psychologist will help the parents set up behavior modification charts to make it easier for the child and parent to work together towards the same goal. There are usually specific items that are on behavior modification charts. These may differ depending on what the problems are and what the reasons for the problem may be. Behavior modification charts for child should list what types of behavior you expect and would like to see in the child. Many parents choose to use stars or stickers to signify good behavior. The child needs to know that there is a “light at the end of the tunnel”. For instance, if the child makes his bed every day for a week and gets five stars or stickers, he will get a reward. Rewards may be something small such as being allowed to stay up later or something bigger like a trip to the zoo.

Behavior modification charts may also list what some of the rewards are and how many stars or stickers they need to earn to reach that goal. You may also want to list certain values towards different behaviors or things well done. You may also list values on the rewards. The child also needs to understand that undesirable behavior will result in loss of stars or stickers they may have already earned.

It’s very important that behavior modification charts be carefully explained to the child so they understand why you are using it and what is expected of them. It should be explained in a positive way so the child can look forward to earning rewards and privileges. Above all, always be consistent with the child and don’t make changes to the behavior modification chart midstream just to make it easier on yourself or your child.
