Mental health disorders do not solely afflict adults but can affect the younger generation as well. There are quite a few mental health disorders that affect children and adolescents and these young people require a certain amount of care and attention to help them lead normal lives.

The mental health disorders that youngsters experience may range from mild to severe cases and can run for a short period of time or for a lifetime. It has been noted by the NIMH or the National Institute for Mental Health that around 5% of children in the country suffer from one of the most common of mental health disorders, which is depression. The percentage is a bit higher for teenagers, with the number of adolescents known to suffer from this most common of mental health disorders being pegged at 8%. The most common mental health problem that these youngsters suffer from is depression and anxiety, with eating disorders and learning disabilities coming in close behind the two leaders.

These mental health disorders that children and teenagers suffer are often experienced for a short period of time when they go through certain life experiences that bring about these problems. These mental health disorders are often taken care of with the help of mental health professionals who help ease the child through such a dilemma and with the help of the people close to the patient who is suffering from any of these mental health disorders.

One of the most troublesome mental health disorders that require the utmost attention of the children’s parents as well as the help of a licensed mental health professional is ADHD or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. This is characterized by a child’s inattention and hyperactivity, often seen when he or she is of school age. This problem is categorized in three sub-categories, defined by the symptoms the affected child displays. There is the combined type, the hyperactive type and the inattentive type. It has been ascertained that boys are more likely to suffer from ADHD than girls. Mental health nursing, also known as psychiatric nursing, is a branch of nursing that deals with the care of patients that are suffering from different mental illnesses or mental ailments. The responsibilities of nurses who practice mental health nursing require them to undergo additional training to cover the different aspects of psychiatric care. They have to undergo studies that pertain to psychiatric medication, psychological therapies and other mental health nursing knowledge requirements.

In the US, the practice of mental health nursing is actually divided into three areas. There are designations assigned to these mental health nursing practitioners, namely the licensed vocational nurse, also called the licensed practical nurse, the licensed psychiatric technician and the registered psychiatric nurse. Just like in regular nursing, mental health nursing also has certain rules regarding the limits that these nurses have in terms of duties.

The licensed practical nurses in mental health nursing basically have the same responsibilities that their regular nursing counterparts have, which is limited to the dispensing of medication and the assisting of the registered psychiatric nurses and the physicians who are attending to these patients. The same goes for the licensed psychiatric technician who also assists in the gathering of information on the psychiatric patients that they handle. A registered psychiatric nurse is often given more responsibilities than the practical nurse due to the longer period of time needed to become a nurse and the more extensive study they had to go through to get their Registered Nurse designation.

When a person wishes to enter the world of mental health nursing, they may do so by studying to become a licensed practical nurse. They can do this by training for a year or two in the aspects that cover nursing, like anatomy, patient care, pharmacology and physiology. Before they do undergo practical nursing training, they have to be at least a high school graduate to qualify. The national boards are then taken and must be passed before they can get the license to practice.

Mental health nursing is an area of nursing that requires utmost patience and understanding. The people who practice it or want to practice it should also possess superior interpersonal skills as well as the ability to create bonds with their patients to further help them with their mental health issues, also called therapeutic relationships. If a person does not possess any of these unique personality traits that should be part of a psychiatric nurse’s package, it would be pretty difficult for them to adjust to the challenges that mental health nursing will bring.

These can be taken care of easily after proper diagnosis is reached and the cause of such mental health issues is determined.

There are still more mental health issues plaguing mankind and some are more serious than others, like learning and eating disorders as well as mental illnesses that have translated to physical illnesses. This event was first celebrated way back in 1992 on the tenth day of October. The first ever World Mental Health Day began without a particular theme in mind although the objectives for such a celebration were clear enough. The reasons put forth by the World Federation for Mental Health for the creation of such a day as the World Mental Health Day revolved around the many issues that had to do with mental health and the need to have people realize how important good mental health was in conjunction with good physical health as well as to show people that the people suffering from mental problems are people that need care and support.

The World Mental Health Day celebration went on every year after it was first initiated and every year, more and more people seem to take notice and to understand the logic behind the activities of the World Federation for Mental Health.

While the first two years of the World Mental Health Day celebrations basically covered a lot of ground, it did not focus on one particular issue for the year or the day. The third year that the World Mental Health Day was held finally centered on one particular issue. The celebration of World Mental Health Day in 1994 had the theme “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World.” This theme had the members and supporters of the World Federation for Mental Health coming up with programs and ideas that revolved around the theme for that year’s World Mental Health Day celebration. This then paved the way for the creation of a theme every year for this day that helps people take note of the need to give some time and effort to making good mental health a priority in the regions that they are in.

In 2007, the theme that is being used for the celebration of World Mental Health Day is “Mental Health in a Changing World: The Impact of Culture and Diversity”. While this celebration is slated to take place worldwide in one day, which is the 10th of October, planning for such an event takes months. The activities that members in different parts of the world come up with are all aimed at showing those who do not yet understand the ill effects of mental illness and what can be done to create a mentally sound world. These activities are then shared with the other members around the world after the celebration of World Mental Health Day with the help of the organization that first created the World Mental Health Day.
